BMC Teacher Story: “I believe education is the key to break the cycle of poverty”

A dedicated teacher at the Parel Bhoiwada Municipal Marathi School, Mr. Gaurav Kardile, is reshaping the lives of underprivileged children in Mumbai’s slums through innovative teaching methods and the use of digital technology. His efforts to bring education to children who have long been deprived of it are truly remarkable.

Mr. Kardile’s commitment goes beyond the classroom. He regularly visits slum areas, where he connects with families and educates parents on the importance of education. Through these efforts, he has succeeded in bringing dozens of children—many of whom had never attended school—into the classroom.

Use of Technology for Better Learning

To make learning both engaging and accessible, Mr. Kardile uses digital tools such as smart classes and online educational content. But it doesn’t stop there—he also incorporates creative teaching techniques like storytelling, interactive games, and activity-based learning to spark curiosity and excitement among his students.

“I believe education is the key to break the cycle of poverty. These children deserve the same opportunities as anyone else,” said Mr. Kardile, reflecting on his deep passion for his work. Because of his dedication and continuous efforts many parents in these slum areas now see education as a crucial pathway to a better future for their children. Mr. Kardile is not just teaching; he’s inspiring a generation to believe in their potential and dream beyond their circumstances.

A successful teacher like Mr. Kardile knows that fostering effective student engagement requires a balance of structure, enthusiasm, and adaptability. Building strong relationships with students is central to his approach. By showing a genuine interest in their learning, strengths, and challenges, he ensures they feel valued and respected. This sense of recognition helps motivate students to participate more actively in their learning journey.

Another key component of his teaching strategy is setting clear expectations and maintaining a consistent routine. This helps create a stable environment where students understand what is expected of them, enabling them to thrive.

Culture of Appreciation and Growth Mindset

Positive reinforcement plays a significant role in Mr. Kardile’s classroom, with praise and encouragement boosting students’ confidence and cultivating a growth mindset. He believes that when students are supported and motivated, they are more likely to develop resilience in the face of academic challenges.

To make lessons dynamic and memorable, Mr. Kardile uses a variety of interactive, student-centered learning strategies. These include hands-on activities, group discussions, and technology-based tools that keep lessons fresh and relevant. Additionally, he teaches emotional intelligence—such as empathy and resilience—helping students navigate not just academic obstacles but also personal challenges.

Mr. Kardile’s work exemplifies how innovative teaching methods and a deep commitment to students’ well-being can transform lives. Through his efforts, he is not only providing education but also giving children the tools they need to overcome adversity and build a brighter future.
